Rising above religious customs, Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal – an organisation known for progressive movements – gave importance to humanity and collected nearly Rs 5 lakh for the flood-affected in Kerala from the faithful who donated the money instead of performing the ritual of qurbani (goat sacrifice) on Eid al-Adha.
Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal (Muslim Truth Seeking Society), founded
by reformist Hamid Dalwai in 1970, has been working towards reforms in
the Muslim community. As part of the movement to create awareness for
the progressive thinking, the organisation has been organising blood
donation camps across the state on the day of Eid al-Adha for last eight
years. However, this year, along with the blood donation, the
organisation gave a call to donate money for the Kerala flood relief
instead of spending that money on qurbani and that call got a positive
response as the organisation managed to collect nearly 5 lakh for the
cause.
Shamsuddin Tamboli, president of Pune Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal told DNA, "Many people spend a huge amount on the custom of qurbani on Eid. However, this time, we are seeing reports of severe floods in Kerala and we felt that we should extend the helping hand to people of Kerala when they needed it the most. Therefore, we appealed to people that instead of spending money on the sacrifice, donate that money to our organisation and we would give that money for the flood relief work."
Paigambar Shaikh, a 29-year-old here is one such contributor who not
only helped for the cause with his contribution but also spread a word
among his friends and made them contribute. Speaking to DNA, Shaikh
said, "This Eid, I did the qurbani or the sacrifice as it is required
but the sacrifice was not of a goat but it was a financial sacrifice and
that too for a good cause. I donated Rs 3,000 which I had saved for
sacrifice."
"Apart from donating my share of the amount, I started a campaign on social media to create awareness among my friends. I am happy that my friends also responded positively. Till date, we have managed to raise Rs 1 lakh from our friend circle," Shaikh said.

"Our appeal has got a very positive response from Pune, Pimpri
Chinchwad and Kolhapur where Muslim people came forward and donated the
money which they had kept aside for the qurbani. We so far have
collected Rs 5 lakh. The ritual of qurbani goes on for the next few days
and we are sure that more people will come forward for the donation
than going for qurbani," Tamboli said.
